Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery ground lead. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.

  1. Detach the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose and the vacuum hose from the upper engine cover.

  1. Remove the engine cover.

  1. Remove the air cleaner.
    1. Undo the hose clamp on the air cleaner intake hose to the engine.
    1. Detach the PCV hose from the air cleaner.

  1. Detach the suspension strut covers on both sides.

  1. Undo the suspension strut top nut on both sides by four turns each.

  1. Disconnect the plug of the reversing lamp switch.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:If brake fluid is spilt on the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.
    Detach the pressure line from the clutch slave cylinder.
    • Remove the spring clip.

  1. Detach the air cowl grille.

  1. Install the special tools.

  1. Remove the rear engine mounting nuts.
    • Discard the nuts.
  1. Remove the subframe. For additional information, refer to Section  502-00 Uni-Body, Subframe and Mounting System.

  1. Detach the gearshift cables from the transaxle.
    1. Detach the shift cable (white) and selector cable (black) from the transmission linkage.
    1. Detach the cables from the retaining bracket, turning the abutment sleeves clockwise.

  1. Remove the accessory drive belt cover.

  1. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors.
    • Unclip the wiring harness connector.

  1. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss and dirt ingress.
    Detach the left-hand axle halfshaft and secure it to one side.
    • Discard the snap ring from the drive halfshaft stub axle.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss and dirt ingress.
    Detach the right-hand halfshaft and intermediate shaft from the transmission and secure them to one side.
    • Discard the intermediate bearing cover and lock-nut.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Remove the center bearing bracket.

  1. Remove the rear engine mounting bracket.

  1. Remove the transaxle right-hand retaining bolts.

  1. Remove the transaxle left-hand retaining bolts.
    1. Remove the bolts from the transaxle side.
    1. Remove the bolt from the engine side.

  1. Remove the upper transaxle retaining bolts.
    • Detach the ground cables from the transaxle.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Secure the transmission on the transmission jack using retaining straps.
    Remove the transmission using a suitable transmission jack .
